Project overview - Marovolavo

The Marovolavo Planting Site is located in the northwest coast of Madagascar. In this area, the mangroves population has been severely affected by deforestation and degradation, with several consequences on the whole ecosystem and local communities.

General Overview - Knowledge pills about the Marovolavo

Charcoal production, wood harvesting and pollution represent the main threats for mangroves, undermining their ability to serve as key elements for the balance of the ecosystem. Mangroves, in fact, are incredible trees with mitigation and adaptation potential, playing an essential role not only for the natural environment, such as soil erosion prevention and habitat for fish populations, but also for the human settlements, providing food sources and ecosystem services.

The project site represents a wide mangrove estuary, located at the mouth of Betsiboka River and part of a massive estuary system extending approximately 60 km from the coast and covering more than 200,000 km2 of land.

The project aims to regenerate the degraded mangroves forest, by planting tree species such as: Avicennia Marina, Rhizophora Mucronate, Ceriops Tagal, and Bruguiera Gymnoohiza which are all native species of Madagascar.

In that way, we help the natural cycle of ecosystem restoration, ensuring the long term protection of the new forests.

Marovolavo is the first exclusive plating site of Green Future Project.
