Project overview - Hope for Sannariolo

Hope for Sennariolo is the campaign carried out by MEDSEA Foundation to restore the damaged land nearby Sennariolo, in Sardinia.

During the summer of 2021, severe wildfires took place in the Montiferru area, within Oristano province, causing the loss of more than 20,000 hectares of olive plantations and native Mediterranean scrub, displacing  more than 1,000 people and killing around 30 million bees.

The campaign is focused on helping the natural regeneration of the land through the planting of olive trees and restoring the natural habitat of the area.

The project will be able to store approximately 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

Olive trees are extremely resilient, being able to withstand periods of cold temperatures and the summer droughts. In fact, the olive tree’s roots, in case of water shortages, are positioned in such a way that ensures the tree gets all the nutrients it needs.
Olive trees take root easily, preferably in soils with draining capacity (no puddles), plenty of air and thus allowing the roots to occupy an area as wide as the crown.
